Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, or ESG, is a newer, non-surgical procedure that promotes permanent weight loss. ESG is performed without incisions – the surgeon uses a small camera that passes down your throat, through your esophagus and into your stomach. The surgeon then uses a small suturing device to reduce the size of your stomach, which can help you feel full faster, leading to weight loss over time.

ESG is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning patients leave the hospital the same day as surgery without staying overnight. Recovery time is quicker than traditional bariatric surgery, with most patients able to return to work and resume their normal routine within two or three days.

For some patients, ESG might be a less invasive option to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Both procedures reduce the size of the stomach, but during a sleeve gastrectomy part of the stomach is removed, while during an ESG, the stomach is left intact, but sutured to create a smaller pouch.

ESG may not be the best weight loss option for all patients, but you may be a candidate for ESG if you:

  • Have a BMI of 30 to 50, with or without additional comorbidities (like diabetes or heart disease)
  • Are committed to living a healthy lifestyle
  • Have not had success losing weight using traditional methods of diet and exercise
  • Are looking for an alternative to traditional bariatric surgery

At this time, most insurances do not cover ESG procedures. Please reach out to the office to discuss pricing options and payment plans.
